What is alcohol counselling?

Alcohol use disorder is a pattern of alcohol use that involves problems controlling your drinking, being preoccupied with alcohol or continuing to use alcohol even when it causes problems.

Alcohol counselling seeks to help you manage your unhealthy drinking habits. An alcohol counsellor’s purpose is to help you through the recovery process and get to the bottom of the emotional aspects that are causing you to drink.

Once you’re able to understand these complex emotions, you can then begin the process of figuring out what your triggers are. Depending on the severity of your addiction, an alcohol therapy plan will be designed for you and will feature varying types of counselling methods, including cognitive and behavioural therapy.

What does an alcohol counsellor do?

Alcoholism counsellors are individuals trained to help people with alcohol dependence and alcohol abuse problems. An alcohol counsellor can help:

  • Provide information about alcoholism and discuss the recovery process

  • Put together a structured and realistic treatment and recovery plan based on your needs

  • Help uncover any underlying issues and triggers associated with your drinking

  • Offer tips and techniques for a successful recovery and long-term sobriety

  • Give regular assessments to determine your progress

  • Support you emotionally and encourage you throughout each stage of recovery

What are the benefits of alcohol counselling?

You’re likely to notice many benefits alcohol counselling can bring. These include:

  • A safe environment to heal - you’ll be able to process your emotions in a secure environment in comfort and privacy away from the distractions of everyday life.

  • You’ll learn a lot about addiction - from the science behind it, the skills you need to overcome it and how to stay sober in the long term.

  • You will be taught coping strategies - through the process of counselling, you will develop skills and strategies to cope with triggers and prevent relapse.

  • Alcohol counselling gives you an opportunity to tackle the core issues that underlie why you might have turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. Understanding these underlying factors can teach you a lot about yourself and help you heal in a healthy way.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my experience whilst on this course. Sian is an amazing tutor and has shown me a great level of support whilst conducting my studies. The course is very suitable for those who have a family as they are extremely understanding and 20% of the term consists of holidays which allows for plenty of time for your own needs. There is a very broad time frame to complete studies which is great for anyone who has extra responsibilities.
