The Real Benefits Of Exercise On Your Mental Health

There are several ways that exercising can benefit your mental health and get you feeling more positive. If you’re on the fence about joining the gym, these benefits of working out could inspire you to start incorporating exercise into your life more regularly.

These don’t have to consist of going to the gym either. There are other ways to incorporate exercise, such as:

  • Brisk Walking

  • Swimming

  • Tai Chi

  • Yoga

  • Dance

There are more ways to incorporate exercise, keep reading to ding out the benefits this will have on your mood!

Mood Booster

There is a certain ‘bliss’ that you get after exercising. This is due to the chemical release that takes place in your brain after you have worked out. Chemicals such as dopamine and endorphins are released, also known as your ‘happy chemicals’ helping you to feel calmer and less down.

Stress Release

When stress takes over our bodies and minds, it can be detrimental to our mental health. Physical activities relieve the levels of stress in our bodies. The dopamine and endorphins released create more peace within your mind, allowing you to feel less anxious and in turn less stressed.

Confidence

You may find that your mental health is taking a toll on your confidence. Using exercise is a great way to combat this. By releasing endorphins and dopamine, not only will your mood change chemically, but over time you may start to gain more confidence from the exercise you're doing.

Exercise can really change your levels of self-esteem and help you to feel more secure in yourself.

Better Sleep

Getting a rubbish night's sleep can ruin your day. However, regular exercise can make your sleep pattern much better, helping to support healthy brain function. Both mental and physical exhaustion from exercise will help your body to rest properly.

If you have a more serious sleep problem such as apnea or insomnia, you may need to seek medical advice.

Reducing Isolation

Exercising with someone, in a group or class can be a great way to break the feeling of isolation you may be feeling. Social settings will gradually make you feel less lonely and help you keep in touch with more people or even make new friends. Another great benefit to exercising.
