Updated: May 29

At Key Counselling Training, it is our goal to provide you with all the skills and knowledge that you need to pursue a rewarding career in the counselling sector, where our courses, events and workshops are all designed to boost your understanding and help to build your confidence. Whether you wish to kickstart your counselling career or enrich your current skill set, we have the right training options for you.

Because of the varied nature of our training opportunities, our courses can set you up to pursue a wide range of career options. So if you’re looking to provide mental health support in your local community or take the first step on your educational journey, we’re here to support your growth.

Read on to find out more about the career and educational options available to you following the completion of one of our courses.

Career Opportunities

Once you have completed one of our courses, there are many directions that your career could take. Some of these include:

Further Education

Our courses provide introductory and supplementary training opportunities, where you may wish to obtain a higher level of education to further advance your career in counselling. This may include applying for university courses or on the job training schemes, where the experience gained through our courses will undoubtedly support you in this process. If you wish to advance to the level of psychologist, then you may wish to undertake a master’s degree or doctorate following our introductory classes.

Working In Schools

If you’d prefer to enter into the workplace directly with your newly completed training, then there are a wealth of options available to you in a school environment. Schools are always on the lookout for student counsellors, who can provide emotional and psychological support on a regular basis. Beyond this, specific counsellors may also be enlisted to provide targeted career and higher education support, where these roles can be incredibly varied and rewarding.

University Support Roles

A comparable professional setting to a school environment would be a university workplace, where these establishments also recruit counsellors on a regular basis. These roles may involve the handling of larger student bodies and more complex mental health issues, where you may have the opportunity to work with a larger team in a role with excellent career progression and training initiatives.

Prison & Rehabilitation Work

Another area where you could utilise your counselling skills is in prisons and rehabilitation centres. These establishments vary widely depending on their security levels and the kinds of inmates that they house, where you will be able to find a position that appeals to your specific interests and experiences. Although such a role may be particularly demanding, you might be drawn to the challenge and versatility that this kind of opportunity presents.

Non-Profit Careers

If you’re hoping to give back to your community with your counselling skills, then a non-profit opportunity may be the right choice for you. For instance, you could offer your support to a local substance abuse or alcoholics anonymous group, where such a role may be offered on a voluntary or on a part time basis. Additionally, you may choose to work with a charity that provides underprivileged or marginalised groups with counselling services.

Marriage & Family Support

Additionally, you may also wish to use your counselling skills to provide support to couples or families. This could include marriage counselling, a lucrative industry that is constantly expanding to support more couples in crisis. Your interests may also lie in supporting children and young people outside of an educational setting, where you can always undertake further child and adolescent counselling courses with us to enrich your knowledge in this area.

Transferable Skills

Our courses can also support you in pursuing a career outside of the counselling sector. For instance, mediation and conflict resolution training can come in handy if you’re working in the legal profession or as an educator. Also, learning how to effectively communicate with others and how to interpret complex emotional needs can make you a better manager and team player in any employment setting.

Our Courses

Here at Key Counselling Training, we offer a variety of courses that are designed to introduce you to the counselling profession or support your broader career development.

Some of our most popular courses include:

Level 2 Foundation Course

Our Level 2 Foundation Course is designed to introduce you to essential counselling approaches and concepts, meaning it is a great place to start if you’re unfamiliar with the industry. This course is accredited by the Skills & Education Group (SEG), and is designed according to the Ofqual framework. As such, the course is built to meet industry recognised standards with its thoroughness and relevance to counselling today. We can deliver this training course remotely or from our centre in Birmingham, so you can find the format that best suits your needs.

Advanced Certificate in CBT Training

Our Advanced Certificate in CBT training is also one of our most popular courses, where this is a part time course that is delivered over a twenty week period. You will learn specific approaches and techniques related to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which is designed to treat patients who are struggling with a range of common mental health problems.

As with our foundation course, this essential training can be accessed online for additional ease. Although this is not one of our accredited courses, it is still immensely valuable for professionals looking to expand their knowledge, such as support workers or trainee counsellors. At the end of the process, you will receive one of our House Diploma Certificates to mark your achievement.

Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy

Beyond this, we also offer a Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy, where this course is aimed at qualified counsellors or those with at least a Level 4 Diploma. If you’re looking to expand your knowledge of psychotherapy and further your professional development, then this could be the training course for you. This Diploma is taught remotely over a period of twelve days.

Integrative psychotherapy refers to the combining of different schools of treatment, where we will instruct you on a range of theoretical frameworks, approaches and techniques. As with our CBT training, this course is not accredited, but you will receive a House Diploma from Key Counselling Training.

Counselling Couples

We also provide an in-depth training course that focuses entirely on providing counselling to couples. In order to gain a place on this course, you must either be a trainee counsellor or a qualified mental health professional. This is another of our fully remote courses, where this format helps to make our training accessible to attendees across the UK.

As part of this training course, you will be instructed on how to provide counselling services to more than one patient in combined sessions, where this form of therapy has grown in popularity in recent years. We will provide you with the tools to help couples to work through their problems together, where this course will take you through a range of theoretical approaches and practical techniques.

Coaching for Transformation Certificate

One of our more unique training courses is the Coaching for Transformation Certificate, where this 10 week remote course is designed to enrich the professional careers of qualified counsellors or provide a starting point for trainees. This course will cover all the skills and techniques that you need to provide comprehensive coaching sessions, where we will focus on building strong relationships between yourself and your client in order to foster positive change.

Our approach to coaching looks at unlocking a client’s inner potential in order to maximise their opportunities for growth. This is all about focusing on inner resources rather than offering theories and concepts to patients. Although this course is not accredited, it will allow you to continue your training at an equivalent to Level 3 certification.
